4 apps that turned my iPhone into a mini game console

Now that emulators are an established app category on the iPhone, I’ve been using these four apps to experience a blast from the retro past.

Stealthy Sasquatchian silliness

Sneaky Sasquatch is a stealth-style game that tasks the player with controlling Sasquatch, a lovably anthropomorphic mythical creature. As Sasquatch, the goal is to sneak around various campsites, raiding food supplies, digging up buried treasure, cooking meals, and engaging in countless minigames. Tons of quirky situations crop up, including applying for a taxi license, going scuba diving, and even running for mayor in an election campaign. The title is chock-full of personality, with bright visuals and a pleasant graphical style. Gameplay is designed for landscape orientation, and external controller support is available natively. 2Ridiculous Fishing EX

Fantastic fish foolery

Ridiculous Fishing EX

Ridiculous Fishing EX is an Apple Arcade game that tasks the player with exploring the depths of the ocean via tilt controls, while aiming to avoid fish in the process.

Ridiculous Fishing EX is an updated version of the classic Ridiculous Fishing mobile game for iOS and Android – itself an adaptation of the original Radical FishingFlashgame from back in the day. The gameplay loop consists of navigating a fishing hook around obstacles as you descend the depths of the ocean. Once an obstacle is hit, the task then becomes to reel upward and collect as many fish as possible, which can then be shot at once surfaced. Navigation makes use of tilt controls, which are surprisingly intuitive and responsive. Being a from-the-ground-up remake, the visuals are recreated with an attractive 3D polygonal style. The game is designed to be played in portrait orientation, and it’s compatible with external controllers – it currently comes in at an app size of 295.8 MB.
