Sonic X Shadow Generations looks back to the past while providing a glimpse into the future of the iconic franchise.

The answer isYes, you need to play Sonic Generations before Shadow Generations. This is because the stories take place alongside each other, meaning that the events from Sonic Generations coincide with Shadow Generations. For those who have played the original, you do have to face off against Shadow to get the yellow Chaos Emerald in the second section of stages. Shadow also appears in the final boss battle against the Time Eater as well.

Although Shadow’s White Space is different from Sonics’, they are connected via a bridge. Some characters that are seen in Sonic Generations make an appearance in Shadow Generations, such as Rouge the Bat, Orbot and Modern Sonic. Rogue had actually planned on getting Shadow to come to Sonic’s celebration, but the Time Eater sucked everyone into the White Space. Shadow Generations does end with a nod to Shadow and Rouge’s entrance to the final battle in Sonic Generations.

How does Shadow Generations Play into Sonic Generations?

The Shadow and Sonic battle made it look like Sonic won, but if only he knew the truth. Shadow had two copies of the yellow Chaos Emerald; one that was fake and a real one. When Shadow is defeated, Sonic takes the fake Chaos Emerald without knowing that it wasn’t the actual one. Shadow holds the Emerald until the end of the game, when he gives it to Rouge to take to Sonic, as he is about to face off against the Time Eater and restore the timeline. Alas, Shadow realizes that Gerald and Maria aren’t from the current timeline. He contemplates getting the Chaos Emerald back from Rouge. Sadly, Gerald and Maria disappear and Shadow is left with the wish that Maria left for him, which is to go save his friends.

The two titles have slightly different stories but intertwine in between.Shadow Generationsdoes a great job of differentiating itself from the original story with its use of story, characters, and playstyle. With this being said, it’s fun to see what was taken from Sonic Generations and put into Shadow, like with the Chaos Emerald swap out. The inclusion of Rouge was nice as well, which they incorporated into the game nicely. Overall, Sonic Generations must be played before Shadow Generations because there are key moments in Shadow that occur in Sonic, which are essential to the story.
