The Auroral Helm is among the best pieces of head protection the hero can get inDragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. Like many good things, getting it involves some work, but the protection it provides makes it worth the effort. Getting the helmet involves three components: Ortega’s Helm, a wrecking ball, and some Zenithium. None of these items seem like they’re the sort of thing the hero would just have lying around, but none of them are that difficult to get their hands on. Once these items are acquired, the hero can have the legendary helmet forged, protecting their noggin from any floggin' the Lord of the Underworld might be prepared to do.

Review: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake

Is HD-2D the key to revitalize Dragon Quest III or should it have stayed in the past?

Ortega’s Helm

The legendary helmet of the hero’s father can be found in the village of Mur. Upon entering the village, the hero will be told stories about a great warrior who passed through Mur and protected them from destruction. This is one of the sections where this remake expands on Ortega’s story, so even veterans of Dragon Quest III can enjoy experiencing something new in this quest. There is a helmet sitting on the counter in the item shop. This once belonged to Ortega, but the hero can’t just walk up and grab it as soon as they lay eyes on it. After the hero has heard tales of the hero that helped Mur, go into the item shop through the back door and go upstairs. Some kids are singing a song, and there is a scene with them. Go back downstairs and talk to the shopkeeper, some dialog will happen, and the hero will be given Ortega’s Helm. This might also be a time when the hero is feeling a bit homesick, so maybe it’s a good time to pay mom a visit in Aliahan.

Quagmire Cave

Quagmire Cave is located in the poison swamp south of Kol. A couple of workers are there building a tunnel that will allow passage to Rimuldar. Going to the southeast part of the cave, the player will encounter a couple of Robin ‘Oods merry men. The goons will talk about Zenithium being in Gaia’s Naval, but the wall blocking it is “as wide as the boss” and they would need a powerful explosion to get through it. This should trigger some memories, as much earlier in the game the hero was in need of some explosive power. This would in fact be the same item from the same location. Unrelated to this quest, the person in Kol said two workers are building a tunnel to Rimuldar, yet a third worker can be found somewhere in the tunnel. This mysterious third worker might be worth giving a closer look.

Heading back to Reeve, it’s time to visit the local explosives expert in his house with the red door the hero visited so early in their journey. Casually talk to the resident and he will gladly hand over a second Wrecking Ball without question. Now that the necessary demolition power has been acquired, it’s time to go back to Lanson and enter Gaia’s Naval.

Gaia’s Naval

Once again, the hero (or really any other party member) will need to travel through Gaia’s Naval on a solo journey. At this point in the game, the hero should be powerful enough that equipping a powerful boomerang like the Gusterang should make short work of any random encounter. When the player reaches the bottom level of Gaia’s Naval, there is a path that goes up or down. Up took the player to the Blue Orb, so this time the hero wants to go down. Follow the path past the scary faces and eventually the hero will be able to open a pathway to go down some stairs. There is a glowing blue light on the wall, use the Wrecking Ball to take it out and the Zenithium is yours for the taking.

Shrine of the Dwarf

Now that the player is in possession of Ortega’s Helmet and Zenithium, it’s time to pay a visit to the Shrine of the Dwarf. The dwarf will be excited about the opportunity to work with Zenithium. He’ll spend the next four days using the Zenithium to make Ortega’s Helm into something new and improved. The hero now has the Auroral Helm, which will improve their chances of not dying.

The Auroral Helm is possibly the best helmet the Hero can equip, and acquiring it is one small step closer to making victory against the Lord of the Underworld easier.
