Star Wars OutlawsCreative Director Julian Gerighty toldFamitsuin a recent interview that the upcoming open-world Star Wars game by Ubisoft will offer a completely different gameplay experience depending on the planet, while also revealing which movies Outlaws' story takes place between.

A translated excerpt from the interview reads: “During development, we kept in mind that each planet should offer a different gameplay experience. For example, on Toshara (the planet revealed in the latestUbisoft Direct trailer), you can explore the vast wilderness using a Speeder Bike, while on another planet, you can become a stealthy thief operating within the city’s underworld.”

Gerighty also adds that there aren’t many planets or auto-generated planets (likeStarfieldorNo Man’s Sky). However, new planets as well as iconic Star Wars planets are planned to be implemented in the game’s world.

Narrative Director Navid Khavari confirms that the story of Star Wars Outlaws takes place between Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back and Episode 6: Return of the Jedi, as this is when the underground crime syndicates were most active. More specifically, this refers to the five crime syndicates seen many times in the movies in various capacities, and our friends atScreen Ranthave done a wonderful breakdown of their roles in the Star Wars universe.

It’s implied that Lucas Film is heavily involved in the creative process, and the idea of having the game take place between Episodes 5 and 6 came first from Lucas Film. Lucas Film is helping not only with the story and lore, but also with the gameplay aspect, so we can expect a product that is as faithful to the original lore as much as possible.

The core philosophy of Outlaws as seen in the trailer is to provide a single-player seamless experience, swaying between exploring bustling cities, racing through fields on speeder bikes, jumping into spaceships, and traveling through hyperspace lanes across the galaxy. To that end, the map is said to be much larger than Washington D.C. in The Division 2, and even the planet Toshara alone is said to be larger than Division 2’s Washington D.C., according to Game Director Mathias Karlson.

Karlson also adds that players will be able to customize spaceships, speeder bikes, and blaster pistols (different modules can be attached to pistols to add attributes to bullets such as explosive rounds). The slow-motion bike shooting seen in the trailer is one of many skills players can unlock, and players can also pick up weapons used by enemies and use them in combat. It’s hinted that the reputation system mentioned in the trailer will influence the protagonist’s story in various ways, but not much is revealed about it yet.

Star Wars Outlaws is set to release in 2024 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
