Booster Gold, one of theDCU’s most anticipated projects, has finally gotten a positive update two and a half years after it was initially announced. In January 2023, James Gunn outlined part of the plan for Chapter 1 of the DCU, subtitled “Gods and Monsters.” One of the projects announced wasBooster Gold, a comedy television series centered around the time-traveling superhero. WhilePeacemakerSeason 2 andLanternsmoved forward,Booster Goldappeared to struggle, but the series might have finally found its footing with a new writer who has a history with HBO and crafting critically acclaimed comedies.
Deadline reports thatDavid Jenkinswill write the pilot for HBO Max’sBooster Gold, and if the series is picked up, Jenkins is expected to be the showrunner. Jenkins is best known as the creator of the seriesOur Flag Means Death, another comedy that ran on HBO Max, which was sadly canceled after two seasons. Other DCU series in development include the Wonder Woman prequelParadise Lost, the Viola Davis-ledWaller, and, following the release ofSuperman, rumors have circulated about spin-offs for both Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen.

Rumors have circulated thatEastbound & DownandThe Righteous Gemstonestar and co-creator Danny McBride was originally developingBooster Gold, but lost interest in the project. In an Instagram post celebrating the latest news, Jenkins confirmed he is inheriting the project from McBride. Given McBride’s history with HBO and Jenkins himself having writtenOur Flag Means Death, it suggests that the DCU and HBO are looking for creatives who have an established working relationship with the premium cable platform. IfBooster Goldcan move through development, it might be able to hit HBO by 2027 and become the next chapter inJames Gunn’s ever-growing DCU.
Booster Gold’s Place in the DCU
Booster Gold was created by Dan Jurgens and first appeared in February 1986’sBooster Gold#1. Real name Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, Booster Gold was originally a regular guy who traveled back in time and utilized future technology to become a superhero, seeking fame and fortune. However, over the years, Booster Gold has been depicted as a true DC hero, playing important roles in acclaimed series like52. The character truly broke out in theJustice League Internationalrun, a comic that James Gunn appears to be drawing heavy influence from in the DCU,featuring the likes of Guy Gardnerand a team backed by businessman Maxwell Lord.
Booster Gold has had a long history of potential television shows. After appearing in one episode ofSmallville’s final season, aBooster Goldseries was ordered for the Syfy Channel that never came to be. ForLegends of TomorrowSeason 6, Donald Faison appeared as Booster Gold, intending to give him a bigger role in the following season. Sadly,Legends of Tomorrowwas canceled, with the final episode airing on June 27, 2025. Meanwhile, rumors circulated about aBooster Goldmovie for the DCEU, which never materialized. Nearly three years ago, fans of the character got an unexpected boost of hope when James Gunn announced he would be one of the first projects in the DCU.
