Harboring fondness for her iconicTwilightcharacter, Kristen Stewart, revealed that if she were in Bella’s shoes, in real life, she would have ended her romance with Edward Cullen. While the world unanimously appreciated Bella and Edward’s romance, Stewart seemed to have a different opinion, where she called out the controlling nature of Robert Pattinson’s character.
Kristen Stewart Isn’t Fond of Bella and Edward’s Romance
Adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s novels, theTwilightfilms featured one of the most famous couples in pop culture – Bella and Edward, played byKristen Stewartand Robert Pattinson, respectively. Throughout the highly anticipated five films, the onscreen couple showcased unconditional, irrevocable, and envious love that stood with fans to date.
“To make the same movie over and over again is dehumanizing”: Kristen Stewart Joining Marvel Seems Impossible After Twilight Star’s Latest Comment
However, given the chance, Kristen Stewart would speak differently on the romance between Bella and Edward. Despite playing the clumsy little lamb, who fell in love with the sparkling vampire in the movies, Stewart seems tobelieve their relationship was extremely toxic. Appearing on theNot Skinny But Not Fatpodcast, the actress claimed that if she were in Bella’s shoes, she would have wanted to break free from Edward’s controlling behavior.
“Let’s talk about Bella for a second. Do we not like her in retrospect?” show host Amanda Hirsch asked.

“Do we not like her? Hey, you better be careful. I don’t know if you can tell who you’re talking to right now.” Stewart joked.
To clarify her question, Hirsch argued that in retrospect, Bella was “a little desperate” for Edward. So much so that she even decided to change her life and “go through hell” to become a vampire. Realizing the question, Kristen Stewart provided a rebuttal by saying Edward was the controlling one who always tried to manipulate Bella’s choices and decisions.

Kristen Stewart Called Out the Controlling Nature of Robert Pattinson’s Character
Kristen Stewart believes that inTwilight,Bella’s character was too invested in her relationship with Edward, which was entirely controlled by the latter. Speaking on the podcast, Stewart implied that Bella’s entire personality whatsoever was compromised by her all-consuming love for Edward, which stopped her from exploring a more independent path.
Kristen Stewart is Why Twilight Had to Reshoot “Thrusting Intercourse” S*x Scenes With Robert Pattinson
“[Edward] was trying to sort of control whether or not she made choices for herself. I would’ve broken up with him immediately. I mean if I was like, ‘Hey, I want to try that,’ and he was like, ‘No, this is just for me,’ I would be like, ‘Well, this is also just for me. My whole life. Without you,’”
Following Kristen Stewart’s comments on Bella and Edward’s romance, show host Amanda Hirsch asked if she believes thatRobert Pattinson‘s character was “f*cked up”, to which the actress agreed. Admitting that she realizes the protective nature, Stewart spoke about the thin line separating protectiveness and possessiveness.

“I get the sort of protection thing, but you gotta let a girl make her own choices.”
Although theTwilightmovies remain a beloved franchise, Stewart’s perspective throws the spotlight on the problematic dynamics between Edward and Bella, which is crucial to acknowledge. While Edward’s actions were romanticized in the story, the actress believes that they should be considered red flags in a real-life relationship.

Twilightfilms are available on Peacock.
