After Disney acquired LucasFilm for a whopping $4 billion back in 2012, that gave the studio the rights to keep building on theStar Warsfranchise, but it didn’t include the company’s other iconic character,Indiana Jones. Paramount still retained the rights to the that franchise, though over the past few years, there have been rumors that Disney could eventually take control of the franchise and give fansIndiana Jones 5. Those rumors came to an end in March, when Disney confirmed a 2019 release date, withHarrison Fordreturning to star andSteven Spielbergset to direct. The question that remains, though, is willIndiana Jones 5be the last movie in this sprawling adventure saga?
Bob Iger, who has overseen the company’s purchases of Pixar, Marvel and LucasFilm through his 11-year tenure asDisney CEO, was recently profiled byThe Hollywood Reporter, who asked if he sees theIndiana Jonesfranchise as being as big as theStar Warsfranchise. While he admitted thatIndiana Joneswon’t be quite as massive or epic, he did admit thatIndiana Jones 5certainly won’t be the final adventure for Dr. Henry Jones Jr.
“Not like Star Wars, but we hope… right now, we’re focused on a reboot, or a continuum and then a reboot of some sort. Well, we’ll bring him back, then we have to figure out what comes next. That’s what I mean. It’s not really a reboot, it’s a boot - a reboot. I don’t know. We [got]Harrison FordasIndiana Jonesin the film. But then what’s the direction? I’ve had discussions about what the direction is, [but] I don’t want to get into it. I don’t think it reaches the scale of the universe of Star Wars, but I see making more. It won’t be just a one-off.”
All that has been confirmed aboutIndiana Jones 5at this point isSteven Spielbergwill direct from a script byDavid Koepp. ProducerFrank Marshallrecently revealed that the story is a “continuation” of theCrystal Skullstory line.Spielberghas also recently confirmed that he has no plans on killing offHarrison FordasIndiana Jonesin this movie, but we’ll have to wait and see where this franchise goes after the fifth installment.
Disney has already set a August 17, 2025 release date forIndiana Jones 5, but aside fromHarrison Fordand the filmmakers involved, nothing else has been confirmed. There have been rumors thatShia LaBeoufmay end up returning as Mutt Williams, but we have no confirmation that he, or any of the other previously-establishedIndiana Jonescharacters will be a part of this story. Stay tuned for more updates onIndiana Jones 5.
