It was E3 when Nintendo unveiled the sequel to their highly successful Switch exclusive game Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. The trailer showed a scene where both Link and Zelda travel together.

Nintendo Doesn’t Confirm If You Can Play as Zelda in Upcoming Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Sequel

The firsttrailerled some to believe that Zelda will be more involved in the adventure this time, due to Link and Zelda exploring a cave which leads them to witness the resurrection of a skeletal figure. Whether this means that Zelda will be available in co-op or if you can play as Zelda in the sequel is unknown but producer Eiji Aonoma in anIGNinterview did comment on this:

It’s kind of interesting that you bring that up, because in Breath of the Wild, you see Zelda and Link together often too, so to go straight into the thought of co-op is very interesting to me.

The trailer suggests that Zelda is now free and has more of a role in the sequel. While Aonoma didn’t really explain the role of Zelda, it looks like this has caught his eye in the way the fans have responded to the trailer. While it would be great to take up a new role in the sequel, whether it be in a certain scenario or more co-op in nature, it would be awesome to have the variation.

The reason the sequel came about was due to Aonuma’s team having a plethora of ideas for DLC content for the first title which led them to creating a second title, according to an interview withKotaku. Maybe one of these ideas was to have Zelda and Link in co-op.

At the moment there is no set release window for the sequel. However another title in the franchise, The Legend of the Zelda: Link’s Awakening is releasing in September 20th.
