With the recent release of the Occult Crescent inFinal Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, players are tasked with not only participating in various new activities, but also getting to level up a new system. Unfortunately, unlike Bozja, Occult Crescent requires the player to have a job that is already level 100. Bozja was an excellent source of leveling up from 80 to 90, and even to a certain degree, it was good for going up to level 100 – although there are definitely better methods. For this, though, players will have to interact with another leveling system, this time in the form of Knowledge.

You will start from level 1 again, and go up to level 20 in the main zone. If you die in battle, you will need to get a raise, otherwise you will lose a level. It’s a grueling system where enemies even one level higher will pick the character apart, but it’s fun to actually have a bit of a challenge and consequences. Don’t be confused between this and the Phantom Job leveling. This is your primary level, while the Phantom Jobs are individual jobs that slowly level up over time, up to around level 10.

How to Obtain the Dazed Emote in FFXIV

One of the handful of new emotes in Final Fantasy XIV’s 7.2 patch, here’s how to obtain the colorful Dazed emote.

Traditional Grind

One of the slowest but more classic means of leveling up is fighting the same old enemies at your Knowledge Level over and over again. We emphasize “at your Knowledge Level” or lower only because the enemies in the Occult Crescent are very tanky and hit surprisingly hard. They aren’t creatures to take lightly, especially if you take on more than one. You’ll likely want to group together with other players and take on various mobs like we did back in Eureka and Bozja, although that was mainly to spawn specific FATEs.

Sadly, this method is not advised as it does take an immense amount of time to do, unlike the other options. With that said, this isn’t completely useless as it does somewhat tie into the next means of possible ways of leveling up.

Weekly Challenge Log

Similar to Eureka and Bozja in the past, there are various challenges you can take on every week to help boost your Knowledge Level. This is something you definitely wanted to utilize in the past, and while it doesn’t give an incredible amount of EXP, it does add up over time, especially because there are multiple ones you can participate in. There are things like killing a certain number of monsters equal or higher level to you or completing Critical Encounters.

Even when you hit max level, these still serve a purpose because you’ll likely still be leveling up Phantom Jobs, and these all contribute to that. While this is limited to only a handful of challenges a week, it does help in the long run.

The second-best means of leveling up is FATEs. An acronym for Full Active Time Events, these have been around since the very beginning of Final Fantasy XIV, and continue to contribute to leveling up characters to this day. In field operations such as Occult Crescent, you will run into these big pink glowing icons on the map. These are the FATEs that anyone can join at any time to mostly take down a boss or kill a specific number of mobs.

The downside to this leveling method is that these will pop up at random times throughout an instance, and because they’re open to anyone at any time, most players will rush to it and kill it almost immediately. So, unless you’re on the ball, you can find yourself traveling to these locations only for the boss to die upon arriving. Still, these are a solid way of leveling up as they grant a good amount of EXP per FATE.

Critical Engagements

While FATEs will be more common, Critical Engagements will likely be the best means of leveling up your Knowledge. While FATEs are more in the world itself that you may quickly hit, Critical Engagements are something you essentially have to queue for. Unlike Bozja where you can queue from a menu, you actually have to physically go to the location to get in, but once you’re in, you’re met with a challenging fight that will last up to five minutes (or longer if you don’t have the manpower).

After completing a Critical Engagement, you will be granted an immense amount of EXP, generally around a third of the EXP bar, meaning if you’re able to get a Critical Engagement
