LG has officially announcedthe G8 ThinQsmartphone atMobile World Congress, alongsidethe LG V50 ThinQthat has a Dual Screen accessory.

The LG G8 ThinQ’s design comes as no surprise - not for those that followed the leaks anyway - but LG’s newG Series flagshiphas some interesting software functions.

Taking advantage of theTime of Flight cameraLG confirmed prior to the show for the G8 ThinQ, the device offers a new biometric security option called Hand ID, along with new gestures called Air Motion.

Hand ID maps the veins in your palm, using the ToF depth sensor - called Z Camera - to create a 3D image. Once a palm is registered, users can hold their hand between 150 and 200mm above the G8 ThinQ’s display notch to unlock their device.

Once unlocked, Air Motion gestures take this one step further, allowing users to control things like music playback, alarms, timers and taking screenshots without touching the G8 ThinQ. Various hand gestures control the different functions, but all of them are done above the smartphone rather than on the screen itself.

In terms of other features, the LG G8 ThinQ has a speaker module integrated into the 6.1-inch OLED Quad HD+ display and there is a Quad DAC, Boom Box and DTS:X 3D Surround Sound on board too. The G8 ThinQ also retains the 3.5mm headphone jack in its premium glass and metal design.

It runs onQualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset, supported by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with microSD expansion up to 2TB. Battery capacity is 3500mAh with fast charging supported but neither wireless orreverse charging.

There will be two variants of the LG G8 ThinQ available - one with adual rear cameraand the other with a triple rear camera. At the moment, it is not known which models will appear in which regions. LG told us it is the decision of the carriers which one they stock.

The dual model has a 16-megapixel ultra wide lens coupled with a 12-megapixel standard lens, while the triple lens model adds a 12-megapixel telephoto lens to the mix. Both have an 8-megapixel front camera with the accompanying Z Camera.

LG also quietly announced the LG G8s ThinQ during the Barcelona show. This model has a Full HD+ OLED FullVision display rather than Quad HD+, though it has the same hardware as the standard G8 model including the processor and front camera arrangement. It has a 50mAh larger battery though and it will have the triple camera on the rear.

No pricing or availability was offered by LG during its Mobile World Congress conference but we will keep you updated.
