Now thatSupermanhas at last returned to the silver screen (and been released on Digital), DCU bossJames Gunnhas revealed the first details about the sequel, which it seems is definitely happening. And soon. The writer, director, and DCStudios co-chief recently revealedthat “the next movie we’re gonna be making is the follow-up to Superman,” with the filmmaker having now offered some insight into his approach to the highly anticipated follow-up.

While we don’t yet know the plot ofSuperman 2(there are theories regarding how Gunn might take a slightly different approach to the superhero sequel), Gunn revealed on Deadline’s podcast “Crew Call with Anthony D’Alessandro” that the follow-up will include “the group of characters we’ve already met,” which could offer some crucial clues.

David Corenswet in fortress looking up in Superman

“It’s within the group of characters we’ve already met, and Superman’s an important element of it. So, that’s what I’ll say, but like that movie, that treatment is done.”

Rather fittingly, Superman had a lot to carry on his shoulders with the reboot. The first movie in the newly emerging DCU introduced not just David Corenswet (Twisters, Hollywood) in the iconic role of Superman/Clark Kent, as well as his supporting cast including Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, Nosferatu) as Lex Luthor, but also awhole host of other heroesand villains, most notably the Justice Gang and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, known for her affiliation with antihero team The Authority.

What Might This All Mean for ‘Superman 2’?

The main players inSupermanincludeEdi Gathegi as Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, aka Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders, aka Hawkgirl, and new Justice Gang member Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, aka Metamorpho. With several of these characters already due to return in future DCU projects, includingPeacemakerSeason 2, it would make sense for the Justice Gang to play a role inSuperman 2, especially considering that they have now distanced themselves from the corporate stranglehold of billionaire Maxwell Lord.

However, it could also be that María Gabriela de Faría’s Angela Spica, aka The Engineer plays a more vital role this time around, perhapsforming The Authority and transforming the sequelinto an adaptation of “Superman and the Authority” or an altered take on the well-known Superman story “Superman vs. The Elite.” But there is one character we’ve met who could be the wild card: Ultraman. Could Superman’s clone make a surprise comeback?
