One Man, Two Women

When Dave Kroupa decidedto start datingin 2012, he had just ended a long-term relationship and was ready to return to the world and meet some new people. At the time, he was 34 years old and excited to see what kind of women were out there. He did what many people were doing and signed up for a dating site, building his profile, putting up photos, and making it known that he was available.

It didn’t take long before he met 42-year-old Shanna Golyar who went by the name “Liz”. By all accounts they were going out, having fun, and having an agreed-upon, nonexclusive relationship. However, in thistype of relationship, someone usually gets a little jealous. This happened when Kroupa started seeing 37-year-old Cari Farver.

The 10 Most Disturbing True Crime Series and Docuseries on Netflix

Some of these disturbing Netflix crime series have turned into popular cultural phenomena.

The two had only been seeing each other for a few weeks when Farver began staying over. It turned out that her job was close to Kroupa’s place, so she would crash there and have plenty of time to get to work. Unfortunately, on November 13th, the two women crossed paths outside Kroupa’s apartment when Golyar came to get some things. When Farver left the apartment that day, she seemingly dropped off the face of the earth, never to be seen again.

Threats, Deceit, and the Truth

With the disappearanceof Farver, police initially looked into Kroupa, though there was nothing to connect him with any kind of crime. The thought was that Farver may have simply up and left her life behind. But that was only the beginning.

Starting almost immediately, both Kroupa and Golyar began receiving text messages from Farver. They were often intimidating and came across as threatening. Kroupa himself received thousands of emails over the next three years. Kroupa was not alone in feeling threatened. On different occasions, Golyar had her car vandalized, and at one point, her home was set on fire. The house burned to the ground and killed her pets. Farver was putting her grudge against Golyar and Kroupa to work.

However, in 2015, when police began to believe that Farver was, in fact, dead, they began taking a special interest in Liz Golyar. As detectives would soon learn, Golyar had been using an app that allowed her to fake multiple phone numbers and email addresses and schedule them to be sent even when she was out with friends. Not only that, but in 2017, the world began to close in on Liz Golyar.

Police found what they believed to be deleted digital photos of Farver’s body on an SD card belonging to Golyar as well as blood stains inside Farver’s car that led to the idea that Golyar was, in fact, the murder. The issue was whether they had enough evidence to go after her. It seemed like it was all a bit too circumstantial. Then Golyar did what detectives love: probable cause.

Where Is Liz Golyar Now?

2017 was the year the entire case broke wide open. Detectives tied her focused and angry behavior to another crime, this one in 2015. She had reported that another of Kroupa’s exes, Amy Flora, had shot her in the leg. As it turned out, Golyar had shot herself in an effort to frame Kroupa’s ex. The police used this case to find out even more about Golyar and were able to put enough evidence together to charge and convict her of first-degree murder. This meant life in prison. In the documentary, Judge Timothy Burns stated:

“Cari Farver did not voluntarily disappear and drop off the face of the earth. Very sadly, she was murdered.”

The conviction meant that Farver’s family could rest a little easier knowing that her killer was behind bars, but it also meant that Golyar still had some control. She has never revealed the location of Farver’s body and has continued to maintain her innocence.

The True Story Behind American Nightmare, Explained

American Nightmare has become the new true crime obsession on Netflix and the true story behind the crime is crazier than you think.

Does Liz Golyar Have Children?

Part of the fallout from the case was that Golyar’s two children were forced to live without their mother. However, since her trial, family members have stepped up to care for them, making sure that their names and faces never reach the press or the public. Meanwhile, Cari Farver’s mother and son have had to live with the idea that their daughter and mother may never be found. The two have endured years of unanswered questions and so now they at least have a bit more knowledge than before. Her son, Max, has created a career for himself and is flourishing after years of dealing with his own childhood fears.

The case against Liz Golyer took many twists and turns, but it seems justice was served. Detectives still hold out hope that some evidence or some well-meaning member of the public will someday help them find Cari Farver’s body. However, with Liz Golyar refusing to acknowledge her guilt, the odds are not in their favor.
