Review: Monster Hunter Wilds

The newest Monster Hunter entry has made its debut with Wilds, but does it improve on what Worlds and Rise gave players?

Who doesn’t love a good monster game? Small, big, or colossus, there is nothing more fun or challenging than taking on something that looks like it can kill you with its appearance alone. Of course, assuming you’ve beaten Monster Hunter Wilds, or are just taking a break, here are some more games with tons more monsters and challenges.

10God Eater 3

Anime-Style Monster Hunting

God Eater 3

In a dystopian world, you and your team are known as God Eaters, beings capable of slaying god-like monsters. Instead of running into combat with a simple sword,God Eater 3features a large variety of melee weapons, shields, and most of all, firearms: assault, shotgun, sniper, and ray guns.

Virtually every tool you take into battle changes the feel of combat, and mastering the abundance of mechanics in this game can get overwhelming at times. You have the option to take AI companions on each mission or use the online multiplayer to bring other players along. While the gameplay is God Eater 3’s strong point, where it falters is in its rather empty world and weak story.

9Dragon’s Dogma 2

Hold On for Dear Life

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Want to get up close and personal with your target?Dragon’s Dogma 2will give you a real fight. In true RPG fashion, you create your character and class before you’re thrown into a massive adventure filled with danger and monsters. Just like in the first game, you have the ability to climb your target and attack wherever you please to find their weak points.

Also, you don’t have to go at it alone. Create your own Pawn to fight alongside in combat. You can even make a team of Pawns by hiring ones made by other players. Dragon’s Dogma 2’s combat can be fun and satisfying, but its biggest problem is traveling. Players are expected to navigate a large open world with limited fast travel and no mounts, so prepare to do a lot of walking.

8Pokémon Legends: Arceus

Why Hunt When You Can Catch ‘Em All?

Pokemon Legends: Arceus

It’s fun tracking down monsters and engaging them in large open battles, but if the world ofPokémonhas shown players anything, it’s just as fun fighting alongside monsters too. InPokémon Legends: Arceus, you’ve been sent back in time to a land known as the Hisui region. Soon you’re drafted into an expedition to discover all forms of Pokémon.

Legends is a fully open 3D world with all kinds of Pokémon wandering the landscape. Instead of the traditional encounter system, where the game stops and drops you into a battle arena, you battle and catch Pokémon in real-time. You also have requests to do for villagers, battles with other trainers, and building your team with more Pokémon. All in all, Legends is a fresh concept for the franchise, and it’s no wonder it’s praised by fans as thebest and longest Pokémongame.

7Shadow of the Colossus (Remake)

Here There Be Giants

Shadow of the Colossus (2018)

When it comes to games with enormous targets, you can’t find anything bigger than the giants inShadow of the Colossus. Armed with only a sword, a bow, and your faithful horse Argo, you broker a deal with a mysterious entity in order to save someone dear to you. Now, you must venture into what is known as The Forbidden Lands and defeat 16 colossi.

Shadow of the Colossus isn’t like other games with shops, NPCs, or other enemies. It leans heavily on atmosphere, music, and the sheer size and scope of every colossus. Each encounter feels like you’re fighting an uphill battle against something bigger than you, which only makes the victory all the more satisfying. As for the story, this is one of those games that makes players cry and drop their controllers by the end. If there’s any version to play, it’s the remake.

6Wild Hearts

When Nature Bites Back

Wild Hearts

Have you ever had a dream where an animal attacks you as a gargantuan man-eating monster? That’s whatWild Heartsfeels like, and it’s a wonderful dream come true. Set in medieval Japan, you are a hunter tasked with tracking and slaying giant beasts known as Kemono, strong animals that are a fusion of power and nature.

The combat feels fast, and the setting and location mesh perfectly with the weapons and armor. On top of that, each weapon has its own upgrade tree, which is very forgiving as you can remove points and put them into other upgrades. In other words, you’re not daisy-chained to a weapon build if you lose interest and want to try something else. If you’re going to play Wild Hearts, however, the console versions might be the better option, as the PC version suffers from performance and graphical issues.
